Saybrook College

Intramurals

From the IM Department: The Yale Intramural program provides an outlet for athletic competition for the Yale community. It is designed for maximum participation: one will find high school varsity athletes competing on the same team as PE dropouts. Teams are organized through the residential colleges, allowing any student to play any one of the 30 sports. While the goal of most athletes is to wint he Tyng Cup, the award for excellence, the goals of the program stress the community of the residential colleges, the values of sportsmanship and fair play, and the lessons learned through competitive sports.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Emily "Melo" Wanger (2013). Wanger, known better by pundits as "Double Trouble," has baffled defenses as both an inside and outside threat for Saybrook's women's hoops team. Her silky smooth jump shot is rivaled only by the ferocity of her skyhook--indeed, Wanger drives through lanes like she's shopping at Walmart. The "Maven from Waban" shot lights out as Saybrook dominated arch-rival JE despite playing a woman down for the entire game.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the week, Charlie "Meister" Jaeger (2012). This crafty veteran emerged from four years of dormancy to light up the pool in Saybrook's water polo opener against powerhouse Trumbull. Known better by pundits as "The Medicine from Edison," Charlie used his husky frame to out-muscle men, women and children alike. While Saybrook lost a 4-3 heartbreaker, it was the superhuman goal scoring of the "Slow-Twitch Terminator" that kept the Blue and Gold in the game.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Joe "The New York Jet" Breen (2012). Breen, known better to pundits as "The Kisco Disco," ran his way into our hearts during last Tuesday's XC championship. Joe finished first among a robust roster of Saybrugians, most of whom were not actually running out of intense loyalty to discussion section.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Jared "Angel Cabrera" Depalma (2014). Depalma, known better to pundits as "Triple Threat," lit up thescoreboard in last week's co-ed football sweep of Pierson and TD that saw Saybrook put up a record-shattering 73 points in two games. Jared, however, plays for more than the team--he plays for IM fantasy owners everywhere. In three halves of play, this offensive juggernaut had a hand in nine touchdowns. In fact, in those three halves, Jared led the Blue and Gold to touchdowns on literally every single drive. Jared's physical presence, can-do attitude and eye for weak competition make him the ultimate co-ed weapon. Even more impressive than his ability to out-jump girls, however, is his legendary versatility. Over three halves of play, Jared notched 4 receiving touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns and 3 passing touchdowns, including a game-winning Hail Mary pass to seal a 40-37 win over Pierson on the second-to-last play of the game. Jared also recorded 2 two-point conversion throws and a spectacular one-handed two-point conversion catch in clear view of the entire varsity field hockey team. When the dust had settled, Saybrook had recorded two huge wins and Depalma had earned his fantasy faithful a whopping 8,000 yards oftotal offense. Jared's interests, however, extend far beyond Saybrook IMs. When he's not bowling over 90-pound freshman on the IM field, this Renaissance man can be spotted drinking an adult beverage on the sidelines of the IM field. For his considerable efforts, Jared will receive 30 mortgage-backed Hudak points and theunflinching respect of his peers.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Naz "Curtis Painter" El-Khatib (2012). Naz, known better by pundits as "QB 2", took another step forward in his storied IM career during last week's football matchup against Davenport. El-Khatib, who has played his entire career as a wideout on Saybrook's men's team, got called up to the Big Leagues (the co-ed team) following a devastating ankle injury to the handsome and quick-witted starting QB. Needless to say, the coaching squad was nervous. They knew, of course, that no Saybrugian would be able to fill the considerable shoes of the injured quarterback. They were unsure, however, whether they could even avoid embarrassment. The Blue and Gold would be starting a wide receiver at quarterback who hadn't played a single game in the co-ed system. What's worse, they'd be doing it against defending champions Davenport, whose hungry defense has been known to gobble up linemen and quarterbacks alike. Needless to say, Naz silenced the haters. The "Pennsylvania Kid" used his quick feet and healthy ankles to scramble out of the pocket and pick apart Davenport's Swiss cheese (and man-down) defense. He called upon his above-average intellect to find seams in the pass coverage. His passable throwing arm, meanwhile, sufficed to lob the pigskin to Saybrook's star receiving corps. When the dust had settled, the co-ed team's newest hero had led them to a shocking 20-7 upset of theDavenport Maroon Unicorns. Was El-Khatib's admirable performance enough to launch him up the depth charts, past the likes of co-ed's golden-armed wunderkind? No, decidedly not. But for a day--one fleeting but glorious day--Naz El-Khatib went above and beyond the call of duty. For his considerable efforts, Naz will receive 30 Philadelphia Phillies playoff tickets and the unflinching respect of his peers.

Congratulations to this week's IM Athlete of Week, Yombe "Wambach" Fonkeu (2015). Yombe, known better by his nickname "Athlete's Foot," has been tearing it up on the soccer pitch for Saybrook. Fonkeu is best known by casual IM soccer fans for his deadly right foot. Indeed, his meaty calves and well-proportioned toes help him to punish soccer balls and goal keepers alike. Yombe's toolbox, however, houses more than just a powerful hammer.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Melanie "Shooter" Borinstein (2015). Melanie, known better to pundits as "The Minx of the Links," turned in an historic and emotional performance at last week's Borsodi Open. Many will remember Borinstein for her tenure as a high school prodigy in the golf-crazed hamlet of "Los Angeles." Indeed, the future appeared limitless for the "Can't-Miss Kid" and her butter-smooth swing. Dark days followed, however, as Melanie slowly collapsed under the glare of the media spotlight.

Congratulations to last week's IM Athlete of the Week, Ray "Magic Man" Xi (2012). This Ohio native, known better to pundits as "The Devin Hester of West Chester," put on a dizzying acrobatic display during the season's first week. His knee-breaking footwork has been described by teammates as "poetry in its purest form." Xi's blazing speed and podiatric precision have helped this Dancing With the Stars hopeful perform on Yale's premier athletic stage. Indeed, Ray's dominance in Saybrook's 43-0 men's football "game" against Morse was nothing short of inspirational.

Intramural sports are organized around college life at Yale. Fall sports include touch football, soccer, golf, cross-country, lawn volleyball, tennis, and table tennis. Basketball, ice hockey, squash, volleyball, bowling, swimming, and inner tube water polo make up the winter offerings. Softball, ultimate frisbee, billiards, volleyball, golf, badminton, kickball, and soccer are played in the Spring. In each sport, the Colleges form a league and compete for a championship. The Tyng Cup is awarded every year to the College with the best overall record. There is room in this program for everyone who wants to participate, regardless of his or her previous experience. At the beginning of each season the Intramural Secretaries and the captains hold organizational meetings that interested Saybrugians are urged to attend. Watch for the notices. Saybrook won the Tyng Cup in 1936, 1963, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002! In the 2008-2009 season, Saybrook claimed the championship in men’s football, men’s soccer, A hoops basketball, C hoops basketball, and coed billiards. In the 2009-2010 season, Saybrook won the Tyng Saucer for second place. Say what? Saybrook!
