Saybrook College

Who's Who in the Dean's Office

The dean serves as the primary adviser to Saybrook's students, providing guidance on academic and personal matters, and serving as a referral to other resources throughout the university. As a resident of the college who participates in its extracurricular life, the dean plays an important role in helping students plan their course of study within the broader context of their Yale career, and life after graduation. The dean provides additional support by writing letters of recommendation, overseeing housing, supervising the work of the freshman counselors, and, in certain circumstances, postponing deadlines for student work.

Assisting the dean is the senior administrative assistant, who handles much of the day-to-day business in the office, including registering students, accepting requests for changes to course schedules, clarifying academic regulations and procedures, and maintaining placement files. Like the dean, the senior AA is widely knowledgeable about Yale's many resources and regularly directs students to them.

Dean Christine Muller

Saybrook welcomes our new dean, Christine Muller!

Ms. Muller earned both the Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Psychology and the Master of Arts in English from Villanova University, and the Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland-College Park.  Her teaching and research interests include Twentieth and Twenty-first Century U.S. History and Literature, Trauma Studies, Oral History, and Popular Culture. She has published several articles on various aspects of the events of September 11, which is also the focus of her dissertation.

Ms. Muller has been the instructor or the teaching assistant of courses in American Studies at the University of Maryland.   For more than ten years she has held residential positions, first with the Office of Residence Life at Villanova University and then as house director of a sorority at the University of Maryland.  She served for five years as the assistant director of Villanova’s Honors Program, filling the role of academic adviser for 450 exceptional students from all of the University’s colleges:  Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, and Nursing.  From students and colleagues alike she has won praise for her engagement with undergraduates in her courses, in her advising, and in her residential positions.

She describes herself as a “passionate” fan of television and film, and loves good stories and good storytellers.  A swimmer and sometime tennis player, she is also voracious reader.  And with respect to voraciousness:  Saybrugians will be delighted to know that their new dean continues to take informal cooking lessons from her father, a retired chef and culinary school dean.

The Dean lives in Saybrook, on the third floor of entryway M. Her  office is on the first floor of entryway I. When you return in the fall, please stop by the Dean's Office to introduce yourself to Dean Muller, or catch her in the Dining Hall or around the courtyards.
