  • Head of College

    • What’s going on this week?

      • A super huge HOC tea at 5:45 on Monday with famous actor Ben McKenzie!

        • Best known for  starring in Batman: Year One (as Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne), the O.C. (as Ryan Atwood) and Junebug.

        • He is now a writer and director.

        • An announcement will probably go out tomorrow

      • Family weekend this weekend! Reception in grass courtyard from 4:00-6:00. Even if your family can’t come, swing by to eat the free food and hang out.

    • Looking ahead

      • This following weekend will be our annual apple trip! Always a lot of fun, so fill out Micah’s email to claim a space before they’re gone! Likely following the trip up with baking at Bigg’s on Sunday again!

      • After October recess, introducing a new program called Oil and Butter with 2 grad affiliates who are from Spain and France. They’ll be doing cooking lessons at Bigg’s house. More details to come.

        • POI: Open to all classes?

          • Yes, but there’ll be some lottery system in place.

    • If you want to participate in the Sophomore pitch, send Prof Near your abstract. Currently only one sign-up, and it’s someone who did research in Prof Near’s lab. Will look rigged.

  • Dean’s Report

    •  Couldn’t make it today, but read your emails!

    • Will be having another pop up SY Dean’s office hours in the common room

      • POI: Follow his instagram @saybrook_dean to know when they’re happening

        • Great POI as always John

  • SAC

    • Amigos night on Wednesday at 9! Fill out the form.

    • Officially booked Jack’s for SY formal on Friday, October 11th. Will be putting a FB announcement / event up soon for information about the time and ticket sales. Selling them in the common room the week before, please make that deadline so Sarah and Jesse don’t have to scramble!

      • POI: Don’t vom on the bar again. It’s why we had a year and a half hiatus.

  • Community Service

    • Continue donating clothes in the laundry room! The bin is back.

    • Still waiting to hear back from Steven in NHS (Neighborhood Housing Services)

    • Position still available! Let Mary know if you want it

  • By-Laws

    • Did you know: At any point during any meeting, a special committee can be made to tackle an issue, but they require a ½ vote from those eligible to do so? How many to make it a standing committee? Why, exactly what our president Alex is thinking, it requires a ⅔ vote and an amendment to the constitution.

  • Media

    • Had a great post (@saybrookcollege) from the SaySibs event courtesy of our VP!

    • Look out for another post from last week’s Saybrew excursion

    • If you want to take over or become an intern… let Jazzy know!

      • POI: Can I volunteer?-  Sam

        • Almost didn’t look staged until they announced that it didn’t look staged

  • Fischer Report

    • Don’t break things, but if you do report it!

    • If you have an idea of a new phrase Sam can coin for this committee, let him know

    • POI (Prof Near): Just had a meeting last week about the upcoming renovation.

      • Will be a 2 year renovation over 2 summers. Brick work on the exterior college. Total reboots of the Squiche, the game room, and computer cluster, which will have modular, moveable tables for individual or group work.

      • Hoping to make the bathrooms look less gas station esque, but they’re limited by the physicalities of the plumbing.

      • All of the student’s suites will be getting floors refinished and walls repainted.

        • POI: Can we get rid of the popcorn walls? Difficult to hang things up

          • Can’t mess with James Gamble Rogers’ vision

      • POI: Which basement renovations are this summer versus next?

        • All basement stuff will be this summer then exterior stuff next summer

      • POI: Is the dining hall renovation this summer or next?

        • That’s a separate entity, but this summer! Good news is that the head of it is a SY fellow who is tight with Prof Near. That’s called politics

        • People want to get rid of the island, but we don’t want to lose it since people don’t actually behave the way they’re supposed to with stations.

      • POI: Will suites also be furnished this summer or was that a rumor?

        • Yes! They’ll be getting couches but not end tables because those have been unpopular in the past. Also trying to reevaluate the size of wardrobes, which are cartoonishly large relative to the size of the rooms.

      • POI: Are we still unable to get rid of furniture we don’t want/need? Ex:desks

        • Yes, but he and Dean Lafargue are working with facilities to find a way to address that issue. Could have more efficient pieces of furniture.

  • SayQueer

    • “We’re chilling.” - Tyler Miles

  • SlaYdies

    • Went to see Hustler’s last week! Huge success

    • Planning an event towards the end of October relating to getting SlaYdies to IMs

  • BlackBrook

    • Having first event on Sunday night! Ordering Sandra’s and having a chill, getting to know you event before getting into the real “lit” part of Blackbrook. If you know anyone interested in joining, point them towards Chase, Kelsey, or Kelsey!

  • College Seminar

    • First interviews are this week and next week! Thanks to everyone who signed up

    • POI: Do you have to do 5 this semester to qualify for the dinner or can it be combined with next semester?

      • The former

  • Dining hall

    • Sent an email about the cups and breakfast sandwiches, but no response

    • Will probably send the same list of grievances to someone else

    • POI: There won’t be a formal announcement about this, but let it percolate. There is a greater reporting of people sneaking into the dining hall through the fellow’s lounge who refuse to swipe when confronted. Even if one only wants yogurt or something else that’s small, dining is dining. They have their rules, and students shouldn’t be disrespectful to staff. If you see something, say something. Otherwise they’ll just bring heat onto everyone. New management team. Chris has worked at Yale before but the other two did not. Doug has cooked at great places. Don’t feed into the entitled Ivy league trope.

    • Also return silverware and dishes to the dining hall if you have them

    • Koomson Report

      • Jane went to Berkely for dinner for a meeting. Ate honey and salami pizza. Tried out a new bubble tea place yesterday. How was it? Only okay …she’s from CA

        • Ooooh

  • Housing

    • We are housed

  • Sustainability

    • Micah sent out a note from her today about the SYstainability. Looking for a rep from each entryway. If you about environmental issues let join and get a cool tshirt as a perk!

    • Email Danielle Losos or respond to Micah’s email. Thanks to all who already did!

  • IMs

    • Won soccer against “old zero point” stiles. They actually showed up!

    • 2nd to TD, but only 3 points behind and 2 uncounted events. 20 points on the table.

      • POI: Will cancel football, so we’re basically in first place

    • Hopper is in 6th!!

      • Wooo!!

      • They say the harder you try the less you succeed, but that’s not the case with SY

  • Saybrew

    • Dormant for a little while as the beer and syder do their thing. Kegging will be coming up. Look out for another email in a few weeks about starting another batch.

    • If you’re interested in brewing kombucha, we have those bacteria colonies (scoby) that he’s been feeding for a couple months.

      • No pets allowed in Sy

    • Looking forward to Oktoberfest!

    • Next time they get together, the HOC will give money to provide tasting of many different types of beer for seniors

  • SYHSC

    • From 1876-1917 the Killingworth Courtyard was the original Peabody Natural History Museum, which got demolished to make way for Memorial Quadrangle and the beautiful SY … and Branford I guess

    • That’s why there’s a torosaurus (some people think it’s a triceratops) in the courtyard

      • “Obviously a different genus” - Prof Near

  • YCC

    • Nothing to report, but if you have ideas go to Nick or Chase

    • John said “POI”

      • “We almost made it” - Prof Near

      • Condoms for the entryways?

        • Jazzy has answers. On it. Condom shortage at the dean’s office.

  • Old Business

    • Email about SaySib costume contest in the next couple of days so please email them and get ideas

      • Prepare them for the weirdness to follow

  • Treasurer’s Report

    • $0.00 in the rolling fund. Spend well!

  • New Business

    • Let’s hear about the meeting between Alex and Dean Chun about what the other college councils have

      • A softball

    • Had dinner at Zinc for the presidents of all college councils. Alex initially thought it was a diff night which was a little awk but got there. It was very focused on $ since diff CCs have allocate money differently. Ex: Branford has $20,000 all year and we have $36,000. Comes to leadership of HOC, less Dean Chun. Should be appreciative of Prof Near

      • POI: Many HOC are less cool than Prof Near

    • Think they will try to equilibrate budget towards the middle. Thinks everyone else should come up, but either way we’re staying the same

    • Also, no one else has a budget meeting. People will send emails to the e-board, then they go to the HOC and request it. An inarguably worse system without the same transparency

    • POI: Gear sale during parents weekend in the courtyard. Selling sweatshirts, beanies, shorts, etc. Have your family/guardians buy you things!

      • POI: Purchase or sale?

        • Older items discounted, newer items not.

        • Regardless, still highly subsidized by college office

        • Stop by to see which discounts you can get

  • Motion to adjourn?

    • Seconded

    • Ben needs to become the president if he wants this to happen right

    • Roger is changing the constitution
